The "Iron Nun"~~ Yikes This Woman Puts Me To Shame
Here I've been kvetching about my carpal tunnel/wrist injuries, and then I come across this storyI saw this the other night about 78 year old....that's right 78 year old, Sister Madonna Buder who is known as the "Iron Nun" Years and years ago, when she first became a nun, she wore the usual full nun's habit, but one is more likely to see her in a workout outfit these days. What makes her so special? At 78 years old this nun races triathlons...you know those grueling tests of strength and endurance that combines swimming, cycling and running and has as the article says, "participated in more than 320 of them -- 40 of which were Ironman class events consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile run."This is an article about her and shows a video (NOT a referral link but to the article and video)http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Story?id=7671970&page=1Buder serves as an inspiration throughout her community -- to both the young and old. And she's a magnate on the racing circuit, where competitors flock to see the nun in spandex who doesn't know the word "quit. "She inspires the people like the everyday person to get out and give it a shot. To get...
My ex-brother-in-law passed away. How would you handle this?
My first husband's oldest brother passed away recently. I don't know any details yet, other than the fact that he was only 54 years old at the time of his death.Admittedly, I did not know my first husband very well when we were married. It was a stupid, impulsive move. He turned out to be a drug addict, he was violent and he cheated on me many, many times. His brother was no better. When I was pregnant with my first son, my brother-in-law came over to our house with his girlfriend and, before I knew what was happening, this guy shoved cocaine under my nose to try and get me to try it.I was appalled! I was totally disgusted! How could anyone, in their right mind, even THINK to hand a pregnant woman such a harmful drug??? Needless to say, not only did I push it away, but I left the room, refusing to "entertain" our guests. The last I knew about this guy, he had moved to St. Croix, Virgin Islands, because of the huge drug trade there... at least, until today. I received an email from my ex-husband (who has since cleaned up his act, no more drugs or alcohol, remarried, and has tried to "make up" for all the bad things he did to both me and our son) with the obituary...
Stupid Decisions 101
A couple of lifetimes ago I used to vacation quite a bit. I’d go to San Juan, St. Thomas, with stops in St. John and St. Croix, but mostly I went to Miami Beach. It was only a hop, skip and a jump from Pennsylvania.I always took my sound movie camera with me.On one of my trips to Miami Beach, there was a fire at the motel I was staying at on Collins Avenue. It was called “The Dunes.”Staff members frantically knocked on all doors telling guests to leave their rooms immediately, advising us that there was a fire.I was in my room, and I began frantically tossing my belongings into my suitcases, but staff would not permit it. I was TOLD to get out and leave my belongings. So, I grabbed my camera and supplies of film and began taking movies of the action. Fire trucks came from all directions. People on the beach directly outside my door stood transfixed watching the excitement. After the fire had been put out, I began visiting some of the badly burned rooms along with the guests who had been assigned to them, busily taking movies of the damage and the guests’ reactions.I still have those movies, which I later had transferred to videotape for playback in my...
Have you ever experienced a Hurricane? Read my story.
Tropical Storm Dolly has churned toward southern Texas on Monday, and forecasters said they expected it to grow into a hurricane before hitting land near the Mexican border later this week.Have you ever experienced a hurricane? Well I have. In 1996 I was on a business trip to St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. I was staying at the Chenay Bay Beach Resort Hotel.http://www.chenaybay.com/The island was bracing for hurricane Bertha. We had the option to go to the emergency shelter at a local school. But we decided to stay at the hotel and experience a real hurricane. At about 11:00 p.m. the winds started to swirl. At 12 midnight, the telephones and electricity went out.We closed the shutters on our windows and listened to the wind as it blew wildly outside. Then the rain came. It started creeping through the shutters and under the doors. We then decided to open the door and take a look outside. That was a mistake. It took the strength of 2 adults to get that door closed again. It's a wonder it didn't blow off.All through the night we heard the sound of things being thrown around. We started having second thoughts about our foolish decision to...
